Once you have been offered employment, your Cayman employer will submit a Cayman work permit application on your behalf.
The Cayman Islands Department of Immigration outlines the process for employment. Offering a range of permits for different working scenarios:

Business Visitor Permit:

Ideal for individuals intending to conduct short-term business affairs, this permit enables you to work in the Islands for brief periods.

Temporary Work Permit:

Appropriate for employment contracts spanning up to six months, this permit is suitable for seasonal or project-based work.

Full work permit:

For those seeking long-term employment in the Islands, a full work permit is the most suitable. This will allow work for up to nine years, subject to renewal.

Dependants’ residency and employment rights certificate:

Dependants of work permit holders can also receive permission to live and be gainfully employed in the Cayman Islands.

Applying for a work permit

Securing Cayman work permits involves submitting an application, usually undertaken by your employer. The process requires documentation such as police clearance, proof of qualifications, and health checks. It’s also worth noting that in most cases, applicants must remain off-island while awaiting the approval of their work permit.

Work permit duration and permanent residency

Working in the Cayman Islands under a work permit has a term limit of up to nine years. After eight consistent years of residency, most individuals are eligible to apply for Permanent Residency.

A foreign national must secure permanent residency following their nine-year work permit term to obtain further work permits. They would be required to spend at least a year residing outside of the Cayman Islands before being eligible to apply for a new work permit.

While the work permit pathway is popular, other routes exist to gaining residency in the Cayman Islands. For many, the investment pathway presents a viable alternative, particularly investment in the prosperous Cayman real estate market. Such investment-led routes often provide a more swift transition towards long-term or permanent residency in the Cayman Islands.
